How to move heavy furniture items

Heavy furniture items can consist of dressers, hutches, pianos, big screen TV's, overstuffed couches, tools, sculptures and the list goes on and on! But basically they all have something in common, they are difficult to move and can both hazardous for the movers and the items themselves in addition to the walls and the premises where they are moving from and to.

How should someone deal with moving heavy furniture items in Toronto where the houses, apartments and condos are relatively small and access is often limited...hiring professional movers is the first step of course, however, how professional are they really?

It never hurts to understand how the tradesmen you hire are supposed to do their jobs, while they might not enjoy having you around watching over their shoulders (rightly so in some instances...) it's always a good idea to be around when heavy and expensive items are ready to be moved.

So here are few tips to think about. When moving large armoires or dressers, if they are very expensive it's always a good idea to prewrap them in moving pads and then strap or tape them tight. This process will take the movers about 5-15 minutes per items but is well worth it. The same should be done to Pianos in addition to putting them on piano skids.

Big screen TV's should be put back in the original box, if the box is not available apply the same methods as with the dressers, however, make sure to keep the blankets off where the movers need to get a grip on the TV.  Moving big screen TV's without the box is not recommended and in most cases will void the damage insurance, next time you buy any large or fragile items, please remember to keep the original box.

Overstuffed couches should be first wrapped in a plastic cellophane couch moving bag ( we supply packing and moving supplies in the Toronto Area, shipping is free with move booking) . After this is done, it is better to wrap the whole couch in professional moving pads, then strapped and taped so it stays secure, that way the couch is doubly protected against tears and the walls.

Sculptures should be crated or packed in original or custom made box, tons of padding and should be used. If placed in a box it would be better to wrap it first in moving blankets. That is the only way to move a statue or sculpture safely, no compromises can be taken when dealing with expensive pieces of art.

If you follow all these tips the move should go smoothly and chances of damage of large items should greatly be reduced. For additional information please contact us in Toronto and we will give you a free no obligation estimate on the cost of you move.
